The valley smells like warm oak and dry grass in the afternoon, and the light on the hills goes golden earlier than you'd expect. Most families passing through spend a couple of hours at Oxbow Public Market, which sits right on the river and has enough going on — fresh oysters at Hog Island, good coffee, local cheese — that it's easy to linger longer than planned. From there, a lot of people walk the Napa River path into downtown, which is flat, easy with kids, and gives you a real sense of the town rather than just the tourist version of it. If you have time to drive out into the Stags Leap District, Clos Du Val or Stag's Leap Wine Cellars are worth the detour — the vineyards sit against rocky hillsides and feel quieter than the bigger names on Highway 29. For dinner, Oenotri in downtown Napa does wood-fired pasta that people tend to talk about for the rest of the trip. If you're building out a California road trip and wondering whether Napa is worth a stop or just a drive-through, the answer is usually: give it half a day and you'll probably wish you'd given it a full one.
