Why We Built American Dream Trip
A short note from the founder on what we're trying to fix, who we're trying to help, and what we promise not to do.
I started planning a road trip with my family a couple of years ago. A real one — eight or nine days, three states, two campsites, three hotels, a budget, a couple of kids who would get bored if the days were wrong, a dog.
By the third weekend of research I had 47 browser tabs open. I had two competing spreadsheets that didn't agree with each other. I had Reddit threads in three different subreddits where someone confidently disagreed with the previous someone. I had a Google Map with so many pins that the pins were on top of pins. My wife, who is patient about most things, asked me whether we were going to actually take this trip or whether the trip was going to be the planning.
We took it. It was great. But the planning was miserable, and that's the part that stayed with me.
The problem isn't information — it's the wrong information, organized badly
There's nothing missing from the internet about American road trips. There's too much. Every park has a thousand blog posts. Every small town has a tourism board. Every hotel has fifty reviews that contradict each other. You don't lack data. You lack a friend who has actually driven the trip and can tell you the five things that matter.
That's the job we wanted American Dream Trip to do.
What we're actually trying to do
Three things:
One. Make planning the trip take three minutes instead of three weekends. That's it. We ask the questions, you answer them like you'd answer them to a friend, the planner builds your trip.
Two. Build a trip that's actually yours. Not "Family-Friendly Road Trip Itinerary #47" with your name pasted on top. Your kids' ages change the day. Your rig changes the route. Your budget changes the hotels. The planner factors in all of that, every time.
Three. Get out of your way. We don't have a subscription. We don't have a paywall in front of the free version. We don't auto-renew anything. You can plan a trip for free, never spend a cent, and we'll still be glad you came.
What I'm promising not to do
A lot of "AI trip planner" tools have shown up in the last two years. Most of them make their money by selling your data, jamming affiliate links into every paragraph until the trip becomes a sales pitch, or hallucinating restaurants that don't exist. I get the temptation. I'm asking you to trust me when I say we're not going to do those things.
Specifically:
- No invented places. If the planner doesn't know about a restaurant or hotel, it doesn't include one. Better six real picks than twelve where four are fake.
- No hidden affiliate links. When we have an affiliate relationship with a lodging or gear partner, the link is clearly marked, and the disclosure is in the footer of every page. We only recommend places we'd send our own families.
- No subscription creep. If we ever charge a subscription, the free version is still going to be the real product, not a crippled demo of the paid one. (We don't have a subscription yet, and there's no plan for one.)
- No selling your data. Your trips are yours. Your email is just so we can send you the PDF.
What we're building next
We launched with the AI planner, a small store of hand-built classic-American-trip guides, and a Made-For-You premium tier. The next big thing is the creator program — letting people who've actually driven these trips package up their itinerary, list it in our store, and keep 70% of the price. That's how the road-trip-content layer of the internet finally starts being written by people who've been there, instead of people writing for SEO.
