How the AI Trip Planner Works (and What You Get in Three Minutes)

A 4-minute tour of the planner. What we ask, why we ask it, and what lands in your inbox at the end.

Most "AI road trip planner" tools are barely planners at all. They take your destination, hand you a list of generic stops, and call it a trip. That's not what we built.

Here's exactly what happens when you open the planner — and what shows up on the other side.

Step 1 — Tell us where you're headed

You'll land in a chat with Cindy Rae (hi, that's me). The first thing I ask is the dream: a specific place ("Utah's Mighty 5"), a rough loop ("New England in October"), or just a vibe ("somewhere with mountains, near a national park, where the kids won't be bored"). All of those work.

If you typed something into the "Where to?" bar on the home page, I've already got it — you don't have to repeat yourself.

Step 2 — Ten quick questions (about 3 minutes)

You won't fill out a form. We just talk. The questions cover the things that actually change a trip:

  • Who's coming — couple, family with kids, multi-generational, solo
  • How long — days you can be away
  • What you're driving — sedan, SUV, truck, RV, 4×4 with rooftop tent
  • Budget shape — frugal, comfortable, splurge-on-the-good-stuff
  • Vibes — national parks, small towns, food cities, scenic drives, history
  • Lodging style — hotels, cabins, camping, mix
  • Pace — long driving days vs. short hops
  • Hard stops — anywhere you definitely want or definitely don't want to go
  • Dates — when you'd actually leave (drives the weather, the lodging price, the closures)
  • Anything special — anniversary, birthday, grandparents along, dog along

That's it. Honest answers in 3 minutes beats fake answers in 30.

Step 3 — The build (about 60 seconds)

Once we have the picture, the planner builds your trip in one shot. You'll see a typing indicator and then a full itinerary materializing on screen.

What's in it:

  • Day-by-day route with drive times and mileage that match what you said you wanted
  • Where to stop each day — the must-see things and a couple of quieter picks
  • Where to eat — breakfast / lunch / dinner ideas tied to where you actually are at each meal
  • Where to sleep — lodging picks chosen to minimize backtracking
  • A gear list — what you need to buy, what's nice-to-have, what most travelers already own
  • State notes — funny facts, local etiquette, things to watch for
  • A "before you go" checklist with deadlines counted backward from your start date

You'll also get a map at the top, a shareable URL, and a downloadable PDF version sized for the glovebox.

Step 4 — Adjust without starting over

Not happy with day 4? Hit "Regenerate" on just that day. The planner reshuffles only that segment without nuking the rest of your trip. You get 3 of those per trip — usually more than enough.

Want to lock the whole thing and edit by hand? That's the $9 editable upgrade — turns the page into a free-text editor so you can rewrite anything and re-download a fresh PDF.

What it doesn't do

No invented restaurants. No "the Grand Hilton in downtown Vacationville" type hallucinations. Lodging and partner recommendations are real places we've curated or that came from a verified data source. Anything the planner doesn't know, it just doesn't include — we'd rather give you 6 great picks than 12 picks where 4 are wrong.

We also don't book for you. The planner hands you the plan; you book direct on the lodging's own site. (We sometimes earn a small affiliate commission on bookings — that's clearly marked in the footer of every page, and we only ever recommend places we'd send our own families.)

What it costs

The planner is free to use. Brand-new accounts get 3 trips on the house — no card, no signup wall. After that, you can buy a small pack of trip credits if you want to plan more, or you can stop right there and never spend a cent. There's no subscription anywhere on this site.

If you'd rather skip the credits and have us hand-build a premium version for you, that's Made-For-You — $29.90, one shot, full premium PDF with curated hotels and hero photos for every day.

Just open it

The home page hero search bar drops you straight into the chat with your destination already filled in. Or open the planner directly.

Three minutes. One PDF. The trip you've been talking about for a year, ready to drive next weekend.
